Jewish Student Union at the University of California, Davis

Purpose of JSU

  1. To establish an overarching organization whose mission is to evaluate the quality of the Jewish experience at UC Davis and look for ways it can be improved.
  2. To foster communication between the leadership of student groups within the Jewish community.
  3. To create a unified structure that can react on behalf of the Jewish community in times of need.
  4. To oversee shared resources made available by the Jewish community.

Meetings

The Jewish Student Union meets regularly every other week, with special planning meetings at the beginning of each quarter.

JSU meetings are held at the JSU co-op.

The JSU executive board meets at 4pm and then the general board meets at 5pm.

The general board meetings are attended by the JSU executive board and one representative from each JSU organization.

Membership

All groups registered under SPAC with a Jewish focus are invited to be members of the JSU general board, and send a representative to JSU general board meetings.  All student groups sponsored by the Jewish community are encouraged to register under SPAC and/or with JSU.  So long as the Jewish Student Union holds a lease on a house on the UC Davis campus, the residents of that house are considered a Jewish student group, and they must send a representative to JSU general board meetings.  Jewish student groups who have become members of the JSU general board are referred to as JSU sponsored groups.  All students who are members of JSU sponsored groups are automatically general members of the Jewish Student Union.  All students who come to at least two JSU sponsored evnets are automatically general members of the Jewish Student Union.  In order to constitute a new student group to affiliate with the JSU general board, a group should do the following:

  • Constitute themselves around a particular purpose, theme or programmatic agenda;
  • Following the review of their mission statement and action plan by the JSU executive board, present their mission statement and action plan to the JSU general board for discussion and a vote on inclusion.  Approval for membership to the JSU general board must be by a two-thirds vote of those present.

Voting

Each JSU sponsored group who is present at the meeting receives one vote on each issue on behalf of the student group represented.  A member organization may send multiple members to the JSU general meeting, but between them, representatives will only be entitled to one vote.

Each JSU executive board member who is present at the meeting receives one vote on each issue.  The JSU Executive President represents all organizations and therefore mahy not vote at meetings except in the event of a tie.
